Day 27

Rainy Day in Sozopol

Sunday, September 15, 2024

DobÅr den,

Today was our last day in Sozopol. We intended to spend a bit more time on the beach and make good use of the large, beautiful swimming pool at Hotel Cristiani. The weather scuppered our plans. It was raining, although the temperature was still warm.

So we had to come up with another plan for the day.

We drove the short distance into the centre of Sozopol and its Old Town. Then we drove around and around the narrow streets of Old Town looking for a car park, which we eventually did find.

There wasn't much to be honest, just lots of quaint little shops selling the same type of souvenirs you see everywhere. Keyrings, fridge magnets, T-shirts.

Grandma was ambushed by a little tabby pussy cat who demanded to be patted.

Sozopol Central Beach was groomed and immaculately presented. All it needed was some sunshine.

After a forgettable lunch we wandered back to Hotel Cristiani for a rest and to repack our bags for tomorrow. We have a very early start in the morning. We drive to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, to catch a flight to Istanbul.

Before we left New Zealand we committed ourselves to meeting up with someone in Istanbul on September 16. We had originally hoped to drive over, but the terms of our car rental scuppered that plan.

We did consider travelling by train. However the Sofia to Istanbul Express is a ten-hour overnight journey, and tickets are not available to purchase online. You have to buy tickets at Sofia's railway station. So flying it is.

We have to leave Sozopol by 6:30 am, so we'll have an early night and a big sleep.

Love to you all from Grandma & Koro & Buzzy Bee.
